about

Calafia, an Amazonian warrior queen, ruled the island of California as an empire of black women -- or so the myth went in 15th century Spain. Today, The Lulls revive the Spanish myth of their home state with their new album, "Island of Daughters," which will be released in New York City on vinyl on Oct. 1. Given the geographical, temporal, epistemological and feminist themes running throughout the album, and guitarist/vocalist Rutger Rosenborg's previous work in neuroscience, The Lulls commissioned Kelsey Brookes (abstract pop science artist who worked with RVCA and Red Hot Chili Peppers) and his 3-year-old daughter, Lively, to paint their album artwork. Their first single, "Bruise," and their third single, "Tyrant," both feature French lyrics. The meditative ebb and flow of the album takes time to unwrap, but the end result is both revelatory and pacifying.

about

The Lulls California

The Lulls blend surf-rock with post-punk, shoegaze and an intelligent pop sensibility. Often compared to Warpaint, Caveman, Grizzly Bear and Unknown Mortal Orchestra with hints of New Order, Bauhaus and Talking Heads.
